Welcome to 5th grade!
Marking Period #3 is officially history here at Shields Elementary! This marking period seemed to fly by this time. Just a reminder, report cards will go home the Thursday before Spring Break begins, so be on the lookout!
Last week we really focused on #CREATIVITY and #GROWTHMINDSET. Students created their very own infographics based on topics of their choice. Additionally, we spent a large amount of time reviewing previously completed assignments. Students picked a piece that they felt needed the most “TLC”. I was very impressed with the honesty and support displayed by the students as they shared their strengths and weaknesses with their peers. When students have the opportunity to reflect on their own learning, there is a sense of empowerment that you can feel buzzing around the classroom.
“The Amazing History of American Television” assessments should have shown up in homework folders with other graded work, but was not used as an assessment that was counted toward marking period grades. However, I strongly suggest reviewing this assessment with your child. We spent a large amount of time analyzing this assignment, discussing how this assessment is similar to the types of questions that they will be exposed to once SBAC testing begins in May.
Homework is back in action this week, so please reach out if you are in need of any extra copies. Also, we have started using an interactive Scrabble-type game on the internet that students are able to use in their spare time. Words with Friends EDU (www.wordswithfriendsedu.com) is a wonderful way for students to practice their spelling and vocabulary skills. Please check it out and encourage your child to play at home if they have time!
We have so many things to look forward to this marking period, and I am looking forward to enjoying this special time with your children!
Thank you for your continued support!
