Welcome to 5th grade!
Hello there! Just a few very lengthy updates about life over here in 5th Grade ELA Land....
Yesterday your child received their HW assignment that is due Thursday 11/19. The assignment focuses around Martin Luther King’s life with associated reading response activities. The spelling list is attached at the back of the packet. Please continue to work on words that are frequently showing up on our spelling tests that you may notice your child is struggling with (i.e., there, their, they’re). I will send an e-mail in which you will find the scanned version of the assignment in case any unexpectedly go missing over the long weekend.
Additionally, your child received their graded writing prompt and spelling test in their take-home folder today. The writing assignment was an on-going, research-based prompt that included taking a stance on whether or not chocolate milk should be banned from the cafeteria menu. I provided much assistance in the planning and preparation of the letter; however, students work independently to use this guidance to construct a well-written argumentative piece. We will be conferencing throughout the next couple of weeks to discuss individual writing goals. I have made copies of both their writing and the prompt in order for us to continue to develop this piece even further. Therefore, I did not make the corrections for them on their original piece. I was so excited to see how many students are working their way to the left side of the rubric!! We are continuously working on how we can improve our foundational skills each and every day in order to apply them to larger writing pieces.
My professional New Year’s resolution this year is to use technology more often when assessing students. Last week we completed an assignment using www.newsela.com . Students have created an account that they should ONLY use when they are in the classroom. If they would like to use this resource at home, they should be creating their own personal account. I am still working out sending home printer friendly versions of the assignments they will be completing using this interactive website. Short multiple choice questions, annotations, and written responses will be completed. Please know that all of these components will be used together when assessing student performance. Therefore, if you notice your child may have scored a 2 out of 4 on a multiple choice test, this does NOT mean they will receive a failing grade (50%). These assignments are graded on a different scale, and there are many different components that will be taken into consideration. If you would like to review the most recent assignment, you can login using the following credentials:

Lastly, you may have noticed a practice spelling bee list in their folders as well. Each class will participate in their own private spelling bee during their time with me in ELA. Winners will advance to compete against other 5th grade class winners. A date has not yet been set for our class bee. I wanted to give your child plenty of time to study the list. I will be sure to follow up with a date as soon as this information becomes available.
HAPPY LONG WEEKEND! =)
